Almost every Egyptian household consumes onions on a daily basis, be it raw or cooked. Besides their fantastic smell and having tasty flavor, onions are extremely beneficial for our health for multiple reasons. In this article, we will demonstrate some health benefits of onions.

Improve Digestion

Onions can improve your digestion greatly because it is rich in inulin, which also helps with constipation, boosting blood sugar regulation, bone density, and nutrient absorption. So, if you have an indigestion problem, try to eat onions regularly and you’ll notice great results.

Boost Bone Density

Since childhood, we have always been told about the importance of good, strong, and healthy bones! Fortunately, there are plenty of things we can do to achieve that, starting with a healthy diet. Studies found that elderly people who eat more onions have better density. People who consume onions also have reduced chances of hip fractures by more than 20% compared to those who don’t.

Great for the Heart

All of us need to take care of our hearts, and eating healthy is a great way to do this. Onions have the ability to fight inflammation, lower triglycerides, and reduce cholesterol levels, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease. Additionally, onions’ anti-inflammatory properties help lower high blood pressure and prevent blood clots.

Protect from Cancer

Did you know that onions have cancer-fighting properties? Studies have shown that people who eat onions and garlic have a lower risk of cancer. Researchers found an opposite relationship between the frequency of consumption of these vegetables and the risk of several common types of cancer. Meaning that the more onions and garlic consumed, the lower the risk of cancer.

Rich in Nutrients

When looking for foods to fuel your body, it's important to choose nutrient-rich foods like onions. Onions are low in calories; a medium-sized onion contains 44 calories. They are also rich in vitamins C and B. Moreover, onions are high in potassium, which is a nutrient that many of us don’t get enough of.

Fight Bacteria

Although some bacteria are useful for the body, other types can be nasty and, in some cases, even harmful. Onions help fight off dangerous bacteria. Quercetin, which can be extracted from onions, has been proven to be very effective at fighting bacteria.

Help with Some Allergies

When the antioxidants found in onions enter our bodies, they reduce inflammation and improve the immune system. The quercetin in onions helps reduce allergic reactions by preventing the body from producing histamine, which causes sneezing, crying, and itching in the event of an allergic reaction. If you don’t feel like eating raw onions, cook all your meals with them if possible.

Excellent Oral Hygiene

Not too many of us are keen on visiting the dentist’s office regularly. Additionally, if you don’t like flossing, eat onions all the time. Onions contain sulfur compounds that work on reducing bacteria that cause tooth decay. You’ll get the best results when you eat them raw because cooking them decreases some of these compounds. The only downside is that they cause bad breath. So, if you’re going to eat them raw, make sure you rinse and clean your mouth thoroughly.
